TutorialHow market hours work
Level: basicTime: 2 min
1Check New York timeThe options market opens at 9:30 and closes at 16:00 (New York time). Outside those hours the bot waits.
2The bot wakes up by itselfAt 9:25 the bot resumes and checks everything; it trades from the entry time you set.
3Check the dashboard labelYou will see “Market open”, “Pre-open” or “Market closed · bot waiting, monitoring”.
Warning: trading options involves the risk of losing the entire premium. DEMO mode does not move real money.
Getting started: the four modes
You always start without real money and move up a level when you feel comfortable:
- SIM: prices are simulated and orders are internal. It shows how the bot works without depending on anything external, even with the market closed.
- PAPER: uses real market prices, but orders are internal: the bot records them and computes the result itself, without sending them to any broker. It shows how the strategies react to the real market.
- DEMO: uses real prices and sends orders to the broker's test environment (fake money). It is the closest thing to real trading: besides the strategies, it tests the broker connection, with its request limits, rejections and partial fills.
- LIVE: trades with real money in your account. It stays locked until you confirm three times and always shows a permanent banner.
SIM, PAPER and DEMO results do not guarantee LIVE results: with real money there is more slippage, more rejections and emotional pressure. Start LIVE with small amounts.
When does the bot trade? Market hours
The US options market opens at 9:30 and closes at 16:00 New York time. Outside those hours the bot waits and only monitors, without sending requests to the broker. It resumes by itself 5 minutes before the open (9:25 ET) and starts trading at the entry time you set.
Strategy profiles: what exists and how they combine
There are five profiles: Momentum (enters when the moving averages cross), VWAP bounce, Opening range breakout (first 15 minutes), 0DTE Scalping (same day, with a premium cap) and Swing (2 to 3 weeks). You can run several at once or pick just one. All of them go through the same risk manager.
Intraday or Swing: what changes
An Intraday position closes by itself before the market closes. A Swing position can stay overnight and waits for its target, its stop or expiration. With Swing the market can open with a price gap against you, and that risk is yours.
Risk limits
You set the risk per trade, the maximum daily loss, the number of positions and the schedule. The risk manager enforces those limits and can block a trade even if a strategy proposes it. The emergency button pauses and can close everything.
Messages you will see and what they mean
Market closed · bot waiting: normal outside market hours. 429: the broker asked to space out requests; the bot slows down by itself. 403: the key or account lacks permission for that action. 417: the broker rejected the request because the market is out of session; it is logged once, not repeated. No contracts at the target delta: no contract met the rules; nothing is opened and it is not an error.
Browser and mobile notifications
They are optional and per device. In the dashboard click “Notifications” and accept the permission. You will get alerts for market closed, pre-open and open. On iPhone and iPad first use Share → “Add to Home Screen” and open from that icon. If permission is blocked, change it in your browser's site settings.
Quick glossary
DTE: days to expiration. Delta: how much the option price moves per dollar the underlying moves. Premium: what you pay for the contract. Strike: exercise price. 0DTE: an option that expires today.
Connecting Webull: how it will work
Webull is the first planned broker. The connection will use authorization (OAuth): you sign in to Webull and grant Akira Options permission without sharing your password, and you can revoke it at any time. This depends on approval from the Webull Connect API, which is still pending; exact steps will be published here once confirmed. Meanwhile the bot works in SIM, PAPER and DEMO.
